Intent To prepare students for life after Mountjoy.

Implementation Post-16 Curriculum & MAPSI

Working closely with our young people and their parents and carers, we aim to create and achieve realistic and aspirational goals for the future by offering a bespoke curriculum experience for each student based on their interests, hopes for the future and ability. This includes opportunities for work based learning, qualifications and awards and enriching experiences to prepare them for independent living.

Impact Our young people leave school with a planned future destination tailored to their individual needs

The core curriculum for students in this stage is English and Maths, some lessons in these areas will be taught in the classroom, some of the teaching is practical and functional and takes place in the community.

Students are taught problem solving skills and a focus on developing independent skills in all areas at an individual level.

Some students continue to follow a Multi-Sensory Curriculum in this stage which will focus on their individual therapeutic needs.

In Post 16 we run mini Enterprise projects throughout the year including a Santa’s Grotto, Card making, Car washing, Class Magazine, Marketplace and Coffee Mornings. So far students have raised money for rewards including a Fish and Chip lunch, Cinema trips and a day at Crealy Theme Park.

We currently work towards Qualifications and Awards including OCR life and living skills at Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3, ASDAN Life Skills Challenges, Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, John Muir Award, Food Hygiene Certificate & First Aid.

The John Muir Award is an environmental award that encourages people of all backgrounds to connect, enjoy and care for wild places through a structured yet adaptable scheme.  Taking part will develop an understanding of, and responsibility for, a chosen wild place or places.

The Duke of Edinburgh is a programme of rich and rewarding activities designed to challenge and develop the students.

We explore the options available to our young people when they leave Mountjoy by visiting Further Education providers and attending Work Experience placements. In the past, pupils who have left us have gone on to Life Skills courses at Weymouth College, Employ My Ability, Oh Crumbs, Dorset Abilities and returned to School as Volunteers.
