Juniper’s visit to West Bay and meeting a special friend
Some of Juniper Class had another lovely day out at Westbay this week. We enjoyed seeing our friend Gabe before getting an ice-cream 🙂

Oak Class spent a fantastic few days at Magdalen Farm last week. Finally, after a tummy bug at the 11th hour halted the residential last time round, Oak Class made it to Magdalen Farm. Having accommodation in the ‘Farmhouse’ meant that the boys and staff had a ‘home away from home’ for a few days. We were shown around and looked after by Izzy our fantastic tutor who shared lots of different activities with us. Despite the persistent rain everyone had a fantastic time trying different activities and became quite adept at getting wellies and waterproofs on and off!
On Tuesday mornings this term we have a group of eleven students from across the school doing ‘You Do Music’ with Gary Pickard, a local musician.
Some of the students were working on notes and chords for keyboard and bass guitar, while others write lyrics for our song. Entirely at the students’ suggestion, the song is called ‘We are proud to be at Mountjoy School’. As previous You Do Music groups have done, we hope to put on a concert at the end of term. These concerts have been very much appreciated by the whole school.
Chestnut class are really enjoying being out and about at Kingcombe each week this term. So far we’ve been looking for animal tracks, (plenty of deer prints there!) Exploring the meadows and learning how to use a compass, We’ve been down to the stream to see how it changes in it’s flow and all the students keep requesting to go back to the bird hide to see what different birds we can identify. Jenny has downloaded an app so we can listen to the bird calls and learn what birds make which sounds. This week was especially exciting. We joined Matt from Kingcombe to go and collect the trail camera that he’d put out about a fortnight ago before going out into the meadows to play directional games. When we arrived back at the base Matt came out to show us some clips of Deer, Foxes, Jay’s, pheasants and finally an Otter that had been caught on the trail camera!
On Monday some of Ash class joined other schools in finishing their sports leadership course, learning how to deliver short sports activities to younger children. Head of PE Kelly Trotter is hoping to roll this out most years from now on to give our students leadership skills and help deliver PE and sports around the school.
