Rowan class have had a great few days. We have had the Sensory Trust: we planted small plants and seeds. We have also had a great time tie-dying this week as part of our Holi celebrations. We used up the dye to create items for Mountjoy Market Place next week. We are always thinking of ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle.

Oak and Juniper were lucky enough to take part in a 2 night residential at Magdalen Farm along with Rowan class. A big step for some of the students as it was their first trip away from home but all coped really well and engaged with the tasks we had to take on. They helped feeding the animals, collecting eggs, joined in with den building and planting trees. They enjoyed crafts using natural materials, making smoothies on the bike and making pizza in the eco oven for snack. In addition to the farm tasks there was bed making, table setting and clearing to be done. Some of the students joined us for the day and despite the challenging weather they had a fantastic time joining in.

Oak Class are working hard to revitalise our sensory garden. This has been made possible by the generosity of Little Groves Garden Centre who very kindly donated a £100 voucher to us. We have had a couple of trips to the garden centre to get some inspiration and to purchase plants. The staff there have been very accommodating, knowledgeable and have helped us to choose the best plants for the different sense beds in our garden. A big thank you to them all!
We cant wait to share anther update with you once it is all planted up.

We had a wonderful time during arts week at Mountjoy! The students enjoyed creating responses to the famous Japanese image, ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ by Katsushika Hokusai. We explored the history of the image and its significance in using perspective in art. Everyone worked hard to turn the hall into an enormous sculpture of the wave, using art materials including lots of cardboard and paint! All classes contributed their artwork, including fish made from plastic bottles and paper boats.
Chestnut class made a cherry blossom walk way, so as the students entered the hall it really was an immersive experience, with the wave illuminated by different coloured lights and with a bubble and fog machine to make it multi-sensory. Students also worked collaboratively create a beautiful print, that will be displayed in school.
Rowan class used drama to share their response to the painting with the rest of the school, treating us to a well-rehearsed performance. Ash class created a musical response, which they performed played live to accompany Rowan’s performance. There was also a beautiful sound scape created by open orchestra.
The hall was transformed and it really was a magical experience for all involved. Thank you to all of the students and staff who took part!
Looking forward to next year’s arts week already!

Rowan, Juniper and Oak had an amazing 2 night residential to Magdalen Farm. We enjoyed orienteering, feeding pigs, goats, chickens and cows. We also made smoothies on the blender bikes, built dens in the woods, made pizzas in the outdoor wood oven, collected eggs, sang songs around the camp fire, star gazed and of course ate lots of lovely food. We were really looked after by all the Magdalen staff especially our guide: Tilda. Your young people were exemplary and did us all proud.
